![]() Despite attempts to achieve a peaceful solution, fighting began with the Battle of Lexington on Apand in June Congress authorized George Washington to create a Continental Army. On September 5, 1774, the First Continental Congress drafted a Petition to the King and organized a boycott of British goods. Colonial opposition led to the 1770 Boston Massacre and 1773 Boston Tea Party, with Parliament responding by imposing the so-called Intolerable Acts. After British victory in the Seven Years' War in 1763, tensions arose over trade, colonial policy in the Northwest Territory and taxation measures, including the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts. It ended on Septemwhen Britain accepted American independence in the Treaty of Paris, while the Treaties of Versailles resolved separate conflicts with France and Spain.Established by Royal charter in the 17th and 18th centuries, the American colonies were largely autonomous in domestic affairs and commercially prosperous, trading with Britain and its Caribbean colonies, as well as other European powers via their Caribbean entrepôts. Rebel-occupied Norfolk was destroyed on Januin an action begun by Dunmore and completed by rebel forces. Colonel William Woodford, the Virginia militia commander at the battle, described it as "a second Bunker's Hill affair".Shortly thereafter, Norfolk, at the time a Loyalist center, was abandoned by Dunmore and the Tories, who fled to navy ships in the harbor. In an attempt to break up the rebel gathering, Dunmore ordered an attack across the bridge, which was decisively repulsed. Dunmore's forces had fortified one side of a critical river crossing south of Norfolk at Great Bridge, while rebel forces had occupied the other side. The struggle eventually focused on Norfolk, where Dunmore had taken refuge aboard a Royal Navy vessel. The victory by colonial Virginia militia forces led to the departure of Royal Governor Lord Dunmore and any remaining vestiges of British power over the Colony of Virginia during the early days of the conflict.įollowing increasing political and military tensions in early 1775, both Dunmore and colonial rebel leaders recruited troops and engaged in a struggle for available military supplies. As planned, the building is a vital asset to the community and will continue to be an educational and community resource for years to come.The Battle of Great Bridge was fought December 9, 1775, in the area of Great Bridge, Virginia, early in the American Revolutionary War. The Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum is quickly becoming an important destination for education, with a partnership between it and area schools. This Museum / Visitor Center is the information center for the larger project being undertaken cooperatively by the City of Chesapeake, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Foundation: to create an historic park that encompasses the four quadrants of land that surround the intersection of Battlefield Boulevard and the canal at Great Bridge. The completed Museum / Visitor Center will house a 100-seat auditorium for multimedia presentations and lectures and a multipurpose meeting room with a catering kitchen. gallery for changing exhibits that demonstrate the importance of both the Battle of Great Bridge and the historic waterways, a museum gift shop, and a resource room for local historical research. The museum building currently has a 3,000 sq. ft.) building commemorating the historic importance of the Revolutionary War Battle of Great Bridge and the history of our waterways is located adjacent to a reclaimed portion of the original battle site. This Georgian style building located on the Intracoastal Waterways is a welcoming place for travelers by both land and water.
